Firefly: A Cult Progression

The crew of Serenity stole our hearts as we watched the relationship between Doctor Simon Tam and Kaylee blossom. We held our breath as we watched a gun fight between the crew of Serenity and Patience. Everyone was in awe of the martial arts skill of River as she took out Jayne, because let’s face it ‘there is no power in the ‘verse’ that can stop her.’ However, for all of its accolades, loyal following, and brilliant direction by Joss Whedon, Firefly never really caught on in the main stream as had hoped.

The brilliant performances of Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Summer Glau, Ron Glass, Sean Maher, and Jewel Staite create a fictional story set in a galaxy in the galactic neighborhood of Earth that feels nothing short of reality. The Firefly class transport ship called Serenity provides an intimate backdrop for the story progress through the exotic yet somehow familiar locales. Oh! I almost forgot there is even a BaldwinAdam Baldwin.

Strolling through my local Barnes and Noble I happened to run across these beauties and it got me thinking about the progression of Firefly since its short lived existence.

Firefly was cancelled in 2003 by the Fox Network (Of course Fox would cancel it, Thank you Rupert Murdock, you pissed everyone off) but didn’t leave fans hanging because in 2005 Whedon and Universal Pictures shot a full length movie called Serenity hit the box office which grossed 25 million, according to Box Office Mojo. What I don’t understand is that Firefly was getting 4.7 million viewers per episode, was 98th on the Nielsen ratings, and somehow got cancelled before all fourteen of its episodes were aired. Well, regardless of the cancelation the Firefly audience grew over spawning the creation of a group of ultra loyal followers called the BrownCoats, as well as a comic book series, and even a role playing game.

Fast forwarding to 2016 and the following for Firefly has only grown since the airing of its first episode in 2002. Nathan Fillion has went on to star in the hugely popular show as Richard Castle in the series Castle, which Fillion dressed up as Captain Mal in one episode. Gina Torres followed up Firefly landing roles in Matrix: Reloaded and Matrix: Revolutions as Cas, and followed by a myriad of television roles that have kept her busy. Alan Tudyk zany acting style earned him roles in some capacity in some of the most popular movies of the last 20 years too include: Dodgeball: A true underdog story, I, Robot, Frozen, Big Hero 6, and is starring in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story coming out in 2016. After her success in Firefly, Summer Glau went on to star in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as Cameron Phillips and has had cameos on The Big Bang Theory and Castle.

The success of Firefly is attributed to the fans and particularly the BrownCoats in keeping Firefly alive but has grown into a world of its own. There have been may rumors about the cast of Firefly and Joss Whedon shooting a sequel too the film or a second season. While this would be most righteous, the allure of Firefly comes in loving it as it is, rather than what it could have been. Dear God, don’t let them reboot it!
