What up Geeks!
I’m loving Scream Factory, the horror producing cousin to Shout Factory! First it was their Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 Collector’s Edition, that was created with love and packed full of extra features to keep you busy for hours and hours! Now word comes that they are releasing The Exorcist III Collector’s Edition that will include a ton of extras and also a never before scene “Director’s Cut” that’s been talked about for years!
The 1973 horror film ‘The Exorcist’ by William Friedkin is hands down my favorite horror film of all time. The film is based on the best selling horror novel, by William Peter Blatty, who also penned the screenplay! After seeing the movie, at the impressionable age of 12, I decided to check out the novel and found it to be just as scary!
The sequel movie, The Exorcist II: The Heretic, really disappointed me! I found it to be a confusing mess that was absolutely boring. It starred Linda Blair, the possessed little girl from the first, but the sequel ditched the realism for mystical mumbo jumbo and fake psychiatric science. So when I discovered that William Peter Blatty had actually written a novel sequel to The Exorcist, called Legion and he was going to write and direct it as a film, I lost my geek mind! I tracked down the book and devoured it quickly!
The film version of Legion would become The Exorcist III, staring the late George C. Scott, Brad Dourif and the late Jason Miller, who played Father Karras in the first film. In my opinion, it is the best Exorcist sequel ever made and contains one of the scariest jump scares in the history of cinema! The production was troubled from the start and the final cut was tinkered with by the production company Morgan Creek to include an exorcism at the end of the film. (The original cut did not include an exorcism). Rumor has it that the last third of the movie was entirely reshot and the finished product is unrecognizable from Blatty’s original vision. Talks of a directors cut has circulated amongst fans since the 1990 release of the film, but fans held out little hope of ever seeing the directors cut….until now!
You’ve heard the rumors for months…and they’re all true! William Peter Blatty’s cult favorite THE EXORCIST III will be bearing its cross on a 2-disc Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set from us on October 25th.
Extras (of which there are tons of) are underway and will be announced at a date in Late Summer / Early Fall. The newly-designed front-facing artwork from Joel Robinson you see here is final (not pictured is the reverse wrap image which will showcase the original theatrical poster art.) Early pre-order now directly from us HERE; receive a free 18″ x 24″ poster of the new art (while supplies last) plus early shipping!
We know that the biggest question you might have is: Will there be a “Director’s Cut” of the film? The answer is yes—but with some caveats. We are working on putting together a version that will be close to Blatty’s original script using a mixture of various film and video tape sources that we have been provided with. This is still a work in progress and we will update you with more details at the time we announce the full list of bonus materials.
