So here we are…Geeks with a Deadpool hangover. I got thinking the other day, what movies are left in 2016 that I can get excited about other than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or Captain America: Civil War? I have to say after an afternoons worth of research I was pleasantly surprised to find some solid titles coming in 2016. However, there are titles coming later in 2016, that I wouldn’t touch with your proton stream.
So here we go Bair’s list of theater worthy titles left in 2016…
3/25 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
The next installment of the DC universe will be making it’s debut casting Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, and the super sexy Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. The brilliant psychopath Lex Luthor will be played by Jesse Eisenberg, who I am willing to give a shot too, as far as a villain is concerned. This flick is full of amazing actors/actresses and should rank high on the watchability scale.
4/22 Huntsman:Winters War
Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and Emily Blunt star in another version of the dark side of faerie tales. These types of films either do it for you or they don’t. The first Huntsman wasn’t terrible but I wouldn’t recommend that my buddies go see it. The trailer for this film look interesting and could offer a solid night at the theater.
5/6 Captain America: Civil War
Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Captain America, Iron Man, Winter Soldier, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Agent 13, Hawk Eye, Crossbones, and of course Pepper Potts will be a frontrunner in 2016 at the box office for ticket sales lets not get it twisted. Marvel has created an empire of entertainment and they are looking to capitalize on the continuation of this particular story line. If you haven’t seen Rob’s detailed analysis of the trailers for this flick, I would highly recommend doing that. Captain America Civil War will be fighting for my number 2 spot for anyone who is keeping track.
5/27 X-men: Apocalypse
Another star studded cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Olivia Munn, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy as their respective X-Men. I have lost track of how many X-Men films there really are now, but what I do know is based on the trailers this could be an entertaining watch. I mean how could I not go see a movie that has Jennifer Lawrence and Olivia Munn? It’s not creepy…it’s called being a fan!
5/27 Alice Through the Looking Glass
My girlfriend almost pittled on the floor when she realized that another Alice movie was coming out this year. (Yes, I have a girlfriend…I know I cant believe it either!) The cast led by Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and the late-great Alan Rickman promises to give you and your date something to post to Facebook about.
6/3 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
While I will go see this I will not go excited or even happy about it. Yes, I am acting like an angry 10 year old for a reason. Michael Bay has had his death grip on the entertainment from my childhood since 1995 with Bad Boys. While Michael Bay is responsible for The Rock, which was a great film, he can stop anytime now making terrible Transformers movies. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are the best, I just hope theres not another multi-sword throwing Shredder!
I have to be honest I am really looking forward to this film, especially seeing it in 3D or on IMAX. Travis Fimmel from Vikings, leads the cast of Warcraft, which has promised us CGI brilliance. This adaptation of the immensely popular MMO Warcraft, will open up new avenues for the franchise as well as gaining a few new players.
6/24 Independence Day Resurgence
I love Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and Vivica A Fox. Liam Hemsworth is riding his brothers coat tails but will give a hearty performance in this sequel to the iconic film Independence Day in 1996. The trailers look interesting as far as the tech is concerned but it could easily be a line for line repeat of its original. Go on Twentieth Century Fox, impress me.
7/22 Star Trek Beyond
Wait…Star Trek in the same year as Star Wars…What is going on in this crazy world we live in!? Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, and Simon Pegg headline the newest addition to the Star Trek universe. While J.J. Abrams isn’t directing Star Trek Beyond, Justin Lin who’s most notable direction credits consist of The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast and Furious, Fast Five, Fast and Furious 6. Lin is a veteran director that has had success but again it was with Vin Diesel.
7/29 Jason Bourne
I know what your thinking…Your kidding me another Bourne movie? When are these guys going to stop making these ridiculously propagated films? Well…NEVER! That’s when! If you don’t like Bourne then we cant be friends. Matt Damon returns as one of his most recognizable roles as the CIA assassin Jason Bourne in yet another pulse pounding adrenaline filled roller coaster.
8/5 Suicide Squad
Hot on the heels of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, comes Suicide Squad, which is set within the same universe. Word on the street is this flick is bad ass! Starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and a variety of other up and coming names, Suicide Squad is sure to be a blast! Have you seen Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn? Wow!
11/4 Doctor Strange
Benedict Cumberbatch had to be an actor because if he didn’t he would have had to give up his lunch money for the rest of his life. That being said the guy is an amazing actor and even though I don’t know much about Doctor Strange, I am stoked to see Cumberbatch’s performance. Go see this.
11/18 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
J.K. Rowling isn’t just a literary genius, she is also a factory for magical ideas and environments so rich that they make us want to be in them. Eddie Redmayne from Les Miserables, Ezra Miller (who will be playing The Flash in 2017), Collin Farrell will be portraying Percival Graves, and the gritty Ron Perlman of Sons of Anarchy will be helping to create a magical experience that J.K. Rowling would be proud of.
12/16 Rogue One: A Star War Story
It doesn’t matter what movies are on the list, if there is a Star Wars film available it will be near the top. Felicity Jones of the Amazing Spider Man 2 will be supported by Alan Tudyk (Firefly), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Forrest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), and Donnie Yen (Ip Man) will no doubt provide an extraordinary storyline mixed with classic Star Wars cliches.
12/21 Assassin’s Creed
Assassin’s Creed is the second video game on the list that would be worth going to see in the theater. Ladies I understand your predicament, that you don’t want to go see yet another kill em’ movie. Well hold on to that thought because the games are severely immersive with an incredibly detailed storyline. Oh yea, there is mystical ancient things that go on, but mainly Michael Fassbender is in it.
These movies had potential to make the list but after much deliberation I have decided to give them an honorable mention.
4/8 Hardcore Henry
4/15 The Jungle Book
8/12 Petes Dragon
8/19 The Space Between Us
8/26 Max Steel
